Melbourne has a lot on: food, art, and festivals galore. But what if you only have twenty-four hours? Luckily for you, we’ve put together our 24 hour guide to Australia’s best city (sorry Sydney). Read on for our recommendations!
8.00am – Breakfast on the Beach
It’s true what everyone says – you should see St Kilda beach. But don’t head down mid-afternoon and get lost in the crowd. Instead, join the morning runners for a stroll on the pier. Avoid getting trampled morning commuters on the train – instead book a cab instantly with the Silver Top app. But don’t take your Silver Top straight to the beach! Instead, head to Monarch Cakes on Acland Street. Grab a coffee, a slice of their famous 100 hundred year old Polish cheesecake, and walk to the water. On your way you’ll pass a few famous sights – including Luna Park!
10.30am – Gallery Hopping
Head back into the city using your Silver Top app; it’s time to check out Melbourne’s famous art scene. First up is the National Gallery of Victoria. You won’t have time to see the whole collection, but modern art fans should make sure to catch the Picasso on level two. From the NGV you can walk down to Buxton Contemporary, and then the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Caffeine addicts can relax – ACCA also offers a well-stocked coffee cart!
12.30pm – China Town
By this point you’ll probably be pretty hungry. Join the local uni students and head to Shanghai Village on Little Bourke Street. One of China Town’s most beloved spots, Shanghai Village offers cheap, delicious dumplings. We’re talking 15 dumplings for under $10 cheap! If you really want to fit in with the student crowd, grab a bubble tea from one of the many boba spots on your way out.
2.00pm – Bazaar Shopping
It’s time to pull out your Silver Top app again. Ask your driver to head to the Chapel Street Bazaar in Prahran. Packed with retro furniture, antique jewellery, and second-hand clothes, the Bazaar is legendary for a reason. It’s easy to spend all your cash in here, so make sure to link your PayPal account or credit card to your Silver Top appfor cashless trips.
5.00pm – Dinner on Chapel
There’s enough food on Chapel Street to feed a (very large) army. We recommend Tokyo Tina, the Japanese spot famous for its savoury pancakes and bingo lunches. With vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options, even the pickiest of eaters can relax. Want post-dinner drinks? Walk to (the brilliantly named) Borsch, Vodka and Tears. Their hot Pleasant Street Tea with Honey Vodka is perfect for a cold Melbourne night.
7.00pm – Deco and a Show
The Astor Theatre opened in 1936, the same year Silver Top first hit the roads! The art deco cinema offers striking architecture, classic movies, and awesome popcorn. Head over on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for bargain $14 tickets. See a double feature or catch a new release, just make sure not to miss the retro trailers before the show!
8.00am – Fitzroy Delicatessens
You can’t leave Melbourne without visiting Brunswick Street at least once. Make your last meal in Melbourne a breakfast panini and scrambled eggs from Alimentari. The twenty-year old deli-café does great coffee and even better food, right in the heart of Fitzroy.
Need some more treats for the journey home? Stop into Smith & Deli on Moor Street (just off Brunswick) to pick up vegan donuts and bagels. Now all that’s left to do is Quick Hail a cab with the Silver Top app, and get out of Melbourne!
